The Donegal darts team won their 11th, All Ireland, inter counties championship in Ennis, county Clare on Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9thof February. This is Donegal’s 11th victory in the last 17 years, a truly outstanding achievement and and tremendously proud moment for the county. On Saturday was the group stage of the competition. 25 counties took part and there were 7 groups of 3 and one group of 4. Donegal were the third seeds and were within a group of 3 with Waterford and host county, Clare. First up was Waterford, Donegal ran out easy winners with a 9-3 success. Then came Clare were Donegal overcame the noisy home crowd with an emphatic 11-1 victory to top the group and guarantee them a place in the knockout stages on Sunday. On Sunday morning was Longford who were no match for Donegal who won 7-2. Up next was Cavan in the quarter final who put up a spirited fight before losing 7-4. It was then on to the semi final where the top four seeds had made it through. Wexford lay in wait who have played in the last three finals and beat Donegal in the same stage last year. In a game that ebbed and flowed, which was 5-5. But it was not to be for Wexford as Donegal won the next two games to win a great match 7-5. For the final there was a 500 strong crowd looking forward to Dublin facing Donegal. Dublin with a very experienced and international panel where shocked when Donegal playing superb darts and went 4-0 up. Though Dublin pulled 2 games back, Donegal went on to take the next 3 games to come to a triumphant 7-2 win and start wild celebrations that went well on into the wee hours. The Donegal squad would like to thank all their fans who made the long trip to show their support. Donegal had a panel of 18 of which 9 players are from inishowen. The Point Inn Quigley’s Point Friday night singles darta league is a dart league which started in September 2013.
In the League we have some of the best dart players in the county if not the country. The players travel from as far as Milford on a weekly basis fighting for their position in the league table. There are two groups with 16 players in each group, each player plays each other 3 times through out the season. Friday 22nd november was the pairs cup qualifers as each player at that point had played each other once. An open draw was done where the top 16 players in the league where paired with a player from the bottom 16. There were 4 groups comprising of 4 teams where it was a round robin format with the top 2 in each group qualifying for the pairs cup final night. Friday the 29th November was the pairs cup quarter final, semis and final. The 2013 Peter Leech Memorial Cup was won on Saturday, 13th April by Charlie Grant from Quigley's Point.
Some of Donegal's finest dart players turned up on the day to try and claim the popular Cup. Charlie defeated John Murray, from Ramelton, in a fantastic nail biting final. John played great darts the whole way to the final pulling out 4-0 win in the first round, a 4-2 win against Paddy J Mc Laughlin in the second round. John defeated Michael Wallis in the quarter final with a 5-1 win and Dean Gallagher in the semi with a 6-1 win. John had a 13 darter,(2) 14 darters and numerous 15 and 18 darters as well as a fantastic 161 finish! But even that wasn't enough to defeat the now 2 time winner of the Peter Leech Cup Charlie Grant. Charlie won his first round 4-0, his second round,4-2 against James Clancy. He won his quarter final game against last years winner Junior Coyle 5-2.. Charlie played fellow county player Clive Aiken in the semi final, winning 6-2 with (2) 15 darts, a 14 darter and (2) 18 darters. He hit (3) 180's and multiple 100 plus's. Murray lead the final with a 3-0 lead but Charlie came back strong and won the next 6 legs.John came back to level up at 6-6 but with Charlie having the darts in the final leg he made sure he got to the double first! The final saw (2) 15 darters, (3) 17 darters, (3) 18 darters and (3) 19 darters. There was (2) 180's, (10) 140's and over (40) 100 plus scores!! Both players deserved their place in the final with exceptional darts like that! Junior defeated Michael Leech, Moville, in a well played final pulling out a 15 dart game to claim the last leg. Junior played strong darts throughout the day knocking out David Kirkland (4-1), Cambell Jackson (4-2), James Weir in the quarter finals (5-0) and Paddy J Mc Laughlin (6-3) in the semi's. Paddy J fought hard leveling the game 3-3 only for Junior to pull away and win. Paddy defeated last years champ Sean Gallagher in one of the best games of the day. Meanwhile in the other half of the draw, Michael was moving along nicely defeating Liam Kelly (4-1),
Rodney Orr (4-2), Previous cup holder Charlie Grant (5-4) and put out his brother Paul Leech in a tight semi-final (6-4) with some fantastic darts from both men. The crowd were well entertained with a family battle in the Trawlerman Bar! But it was Junior Coyle with the stronger darts and a 7-2 win who walked away proudly with this years title!!
